Dani Robertson from Rhosneigr on the Isle of Anglesey, has been obsessed with the sea for all her life but was a late starter to surfing.

As part of our Network She Empowering Participation Project Dani tells us all about the Surf Senioritas, standing up for women all over the world

I started Surf Senioritas in November 2011 after being fed up of surfing with boys who had promised to teach me but always just left me in the white water getting battered by huge waves!

Luckily I found two other women in the same position, Carys Boulton and Sarah Twells so together we founded the group. We started to develop an online community for women who loved the sea and wanted to find others to surf, sup or even just swim with! Since 2011 we have run endless meet ups, surf sessions and even managed to get sponsorship to train a number of women up to deliver surf training at beaches in north Devon, South Wales and the North East of England. These sessions are what I would like to further develop until we have a seniorita surf team!

We stand up for women all over the world who are facing sexism and unfair treatment in surf and other sports, banding together to make our voices heard. We combat over sexualisation of women in the surf industry by sharing images and stories of real women who surf in the UK and beyond.

This year saw the launch of the Institute for Women surfers with academics Lyndsey Stoodley, Krista Comer and myself at the helm. This institute also led to the creation of upcoming surf zine ‘daughters of the sea’ which will showcase women in surf in Wales.

It’s an honour and a privilege to be shortlisted for the Sunday Times Sports Woman of the Year Grassroots award. I share the category with 3 other amazing women so it’s incredibly humbling. Voting ends on October 29th and I would love to bring it home for Wales!
