2020 – Let’s Learn Something New!

New decade, new year, new month, new beginnings, new resolutions … that’s a lot of new!

I love new, who doesn’t? But I’m not a big fan of new year’s resolutions. I like to think in terms of new habits or small changes you can add into your daily life.

This year and this new decade however, I also made the decision to learn to do something new.

Q: When was the last time you did something for the first time?
A: I certainly can’t remember!

Time to make some changes!

Sneaky little rat!
2020 is the year of the rat – of course I googled it for more info and this fact made me smile.
The Rat is the first of all the zodiac animals in the 12-year cycle. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order they arrived at his party. Apparently the rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride and just at the finish line the rat jumped down and landed ahead of the Ox. Sneaky little rat!
Anyway, the rat symbolizes yang, the beginning of a new day. Yang is the active cycle – seen in all forms of change. For me 2020 is not only a new year and a new decade, it’s the year of change and learning to do something new. Why not?

It’s all about the yang!
So, what will represent my yang in 2020?
  1. I’m going to learn to ski. Yes, at the age of 46 I’m going to learn something totally new … and it scares me. Especially something active. I’m an active person and most sports I can already do and am quite good at. But skiing … that’s a whole load of new and I’ll be completely out of my comfort zone! From the beginning of March, I’ll be going every Monday night for 6 weeks to the indoor Skidome nearby to start my skiing journey – from zero to skiing! When I say starting from zero, it’s probably actually more in the minus – but you’ve got to start somewhere! I’m fit and strong and my balance is fairly good (thanks to yoga), but I must say that when I comes to technical stuff, I’m a bit rubbish! The goal is to go skiing for our Christmas holidays 2020. Watch this space!
  2. Find the fun again and have more adventures! Last year I bought a house and we sacrificed our summer holidays by doing it up and staying at home. On paper great – a very practical and sensible thing to do. But in reality we missed the adventure. So, in February we’re kicking off the 2020 adventures with a trip to Thailand for a couple of weeks. We’ll be going south this time and island hopping with our backpacks. First stop Bangkok to get our fix of street food and then south to find the sun and fun!
  3. We’ve bought race bikes! So I’ll be learning to stay upright, cycling on such a lightweight frame that will feel so weird after ploughing along on my heavy ‘stadsfiets’ (city bike) for so long. Feeling that the slightest wind will blow me over! OK, time to man up! Keeping up with our adventure theme for this year, we plan to fit baggage systems to them so we can cycle 2,000km this summer from our house to the border of Spain. That’s one big adventure! I can’t wait.
So that’s just a sneak peek at the 2020 plan. Active rats that are learning to ski, finding world adventures and cycling 2,000km. Hello 2020 – I’m very pleased to meet you!
