If in Doubt – Flat Out!

Round 9: The Welsh Tarmac Rally Championship 2018

On a crisp cold Sunday morning at Pembrey Circuit there was a plan to be executed, and a title to be won. With 3rd place in a National Rally Championship within Jade’s grasp, no one was going to stop her!

Jade had a plan on Sunday morning, it was simple. In the words of one of rallying’sgreatest drivers, “if in doubt, flat out“ this was the motto for the day.

Six drivers were mathematically able to clinch 3rd place in the 2018 drivers’championship. Jade had a slender five point lead, over her next challenger who in turn was only one point in front of the next driver. It promised to be a good day’s motorsport.

Jade put her marker down on the first stage of the Fairfield Merlin Stages Rally, being fastest of the challengers by three seconds. Stage 2 was to be the hammer blow, with Jade arriving at the finish line on the rear bumper of one of the challengers, taking 21 seconds off her podium rival.

“I decided to make my challenge clear from the start and take time out of my rivals early, so that if we had a problem later in the day, we could stay in control. I made a really big push on the second stage and the tyres came on perfectly giving me great confidence to push through the corners”.

The unique nature of the 9th round was to run the event over five long stages rather than the usual shorter eight stages. Jade revelled in the long stages demonstrating her fitness and focus to the challenge in hand. Demoralising the opposition with another crushing blow on stage 3, Jade moved over one minute ahead of the next title challenger.

Jade’s relentless pursuit of the podium position continued over the next two stages to finish the rally one minute and 29 seconds ahead of the next challenger to secure 3rdplace outright in the Championship.

2018 Junior and Class 7 Welsh Tarmac Rally Champion

While chasing the podium position in the overall championship, Jade secured both the junior and class titles by impressive margins.

“The target this year was the Junior title and to finish top three in class and top six in the championship and then build on this during 2019. To win the class and to finish top three this year is fantastic. I am really pleased with the result, and already excited for 2019, as I now have a much better understanding of the stages which especially over Epynt is reallyhelpful” said Jade.

“The new Hankook tyres we used this year have been really great, the moulded pattern is a big help on damp stages, especially when getting caught out in the rain when your wet tyres are still 30 miles away in the van!”

“The 2018 Championship title race has been exciting, nerve racking, challenging physically andmentally and a real test of will. To fit in long hours at work and then motivate yourself to go to the gym or go for a run is not easy, but winning is all about putting in that bit more effort than your competitors. I cannot do this by myself so a big thank you to everyone at North Wales Honda for helping to prepare the car, clean the car and transport the car. Martin for building the car and Mum, Dad and Rich for unwavering moral support and my brothers for keeping megrounded. It’s been amazing!”
