The Fizzy Friday 5k

Friday 8th September saw over 100 women descend on Llandudno Promenade to take part in a very different kind of a fun run. The Fizzy Friday 5k, the first event of its kind to be run in North Wales proved to be a huge success.

The idea of a prosecco fuelled fun run grabbed the imagination of both serious competitive runners as well as fun runners and those just keen to get involved, with women traveling from as far as Carlisle and Norfolk to take part.

Ruth Lloyd Williams of Network She “In a bid to support women and young girls in sport we wanted to create a fundraising event that would give everyone, at whatever level of fitness, the opportunity to get involved, raise money and have some fun. We wanted to create something new.

We were blown away by the response to the Fizzy Friday 5k. Although we felt it was a good idea, we didn’t anticipate the uptake for places to be so high. Selling out in just two weeks we had a long waiting list, women were still calling on the day to sign up teams to take part.”

Runners registered at the Llandudno Bay Hotel before moving on to the Promenade. Keith Barker of Williams Denton, who along with the Llandudno Bay Hotel, the King’s Head, St George and the Imperial Hotel, sponsored the Fizzy Friday 5K, waved the runners off as they made their way along the 5k route, stopping off at each venue for a prosecco pit stop.

Caroline Roberts of Bella The Prosecco Van and Co-organiser of the Fizzy Friday 5k said “we have been overwhelmed by the feedback we have received from everyone who took part. They loved it. We had competitive Tri athletes who enjoyed the fun element of the event without the pressure of a personal best and women who wouldn’t otherwise have got involved, loved the no pressure social element of the fun run.
The money raised through the Fizzy Friday 5K will go towards paying winter pitch fees for the Llysfaen Lionesses Football team, kit and equipment for other women and girls teams and individual from across the region.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who volunteered to marshal the event on the day. The threat of torrential rain didn’t stop them turning up, they did a great job. Those experienced runners taking part were so complimentary about the number and level of support from the marshals.

Thankfully the weather held off until the last runner had made it over the finishing line and they were all asking us to do it again next year, so it looks like the Fizzy Friday 5K is going to be an annual event.”

If you run a women or girls team in any sport or are an individual in need of kit and equipment we would like to invite you to write in and apply for funding to hello@networkshe.co.uk
